Garden and terrace watering accounts for 20–30% of urban household water use in India — and most of it is inefficient. Overhead watering with a hose or can drenches the soil surface and evaporates; much of it never reaches the root zone. With the right combination of irrigation method, soil, mulch and plant selection, you can grow a lush, productive garden on half the water or less.
Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone through thin emitter tubes, operating at low pressure (0.5–1 kg/cm²). Evaporation loss drops from 20–30% (overhead watering) to under 5%. Self-watering pots have a reservoir at the base separated from the soil by a wicking medium. Plants draw water upward through capillary action exactly when they need it, preventing both over-watering and under-watering. A 5-litre reservoir in a medium SWP sustains most herbs and vegetables for 4–7 days without refilling — ideal for working professionals who cannot water daily. SWPs use 30–50% less water than conventional pots.
Standard red soil or clay garden soil compacts in pots, becomes hydrophobic when dry, and causes water to run off the surface rather than penetrate to roots. The ideal water-retentive yet well-draining pot mix for Indian conditions: 40% coco peat (water retention) + 30% compost/vermicompost (nutrients + structure) + 20% perlite or coarse river sand (drainage) + 10% red soil (minerals). This mix retains 3× more plant-available water than pure soil and requires watering 50–60% less frequently.
Covering the soil surface of pots and garden beds with a 3–5 cm layer of dry leaves, coconut coir, wood chips or straw dramatically reduces surface evaporation. Studies show mulched containers need 25–40% less watering than bare-soil containers under Indian summer conditions. Dry leaves, a zero-cost resource in most Indian homes with any outdoor space, work just as well as commercial mulch.

Grey water — water from kitchen sinks, wash basins, laundry and bathing (not toilet water) — can safely water non-edible plants when applied to the soil (not as overhead spray). Collect rinse water from vegetable washing, handwashing basins and the final rinse cycle of clothes (without fabric softener) in a bucket and use it for ornamental pots, lawn or trees. Avoid grey water on leafy vegetables you eat raw due to soap and bacteria risk.
