You do not need a laboratory to know if your water is safe. From TDS meters to DIY test kits and government-certified labs, here is a step-by-step guide to testing water quality at home in India.

Most Indians have never tested the water they drink daily. Yet according to CPCB, around 37% of water samples tested nationwide fail at least one BIS quality parameter. Contamination is often invisible — arsenic, nitrates and fluoride have no colour, taste or smell at harmful concentrations. Testing is the only way to know for certain what you are consuming.

Test 1: The TDS Meter (₹200–₹800)

A Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter measures the combined concentration of all dissolved minerals and salts in water, expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). BIS recommends a TDS below 500 mg/L for drinking water, with 300 mg/L being ideal. TDS above 1,200 mg/L gives water a bitter or salty taste and can stress kidneys over time. TDS below 50 mg/L (typical of some RO outputs) lacks beneficial minerals.

Test 2: Colour, Smell and Turbidity (Free)

•Colour: Fill a clear glass. Pure water is colourless. Yellow/brown tint indicates iron or organic matter. Greenish tint can mean algae. Bluish can indicate copper pipe corrosion.
•Smell: Safe water has no smell. Chlorine smell is from municipal treatment (acceptable at low levels). Rotten-egg smell = hydrogen sulphide (bacterial contamination or sulphur minerals). Petroleum smell = fuel contamination.
•Turbidity: Hold glass against white paper in daylight. Cloudy/murky water indicates suspended particles — bacteria can hide behind particles and evade disinfection.
•Taste: Metallic taste can mean iron, copper or manganese. Salty taste indicates high TDS or chloride. Bitter taste may signal sulphate or magnesium excess.

Test 3: Home Test Kits (₹300–₹1,500)

Multi-parameter water test strips (available on Amazon India, Flipkart, and local lab supply stores) can simultaneously detect pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, iron, and bacteria. Brands like LaMotte, Hanna Instruments, and Indian-made Swajal kits are available. Simply dip the strip, wait 30–60 seconds and compare colours to the chart. While not as precise as lab analysis, strips reliably flag contamination that requires further investigation.

For a comprehensive 28–65 parameter analysis including arsenic, fluoride, heavy metals and pesticides, send a sample to an NABL-accredited water testing laboratory. State-run labs under the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) often test for free or at subsidised rates. Private labs like Vimta, SGS, Intertek and Bureau Veritas are available in major cities. Collect water in a clean, sterilised 1-litre bottle provided by the lab, avoiding contamination, and submit within 24 hours.
