Rainwater harvesting sounds technically complex, but the mathematics is surprisingly simple. The amount of water you can collect depends on just two factors: the area of your catchment surface (usually your roof) and the rainfall at your location. Once you know both, you can size a tank, estimate your water bill savings and decide whether the investment makes financial and environmental sense.

The Formula

Collectable rainwater (litres) = Roof Area (m²) × Annual Rainfall (mm) × Runoff Coefficient × 0.001. The runoff coefficient accounts for evaporation, splash loss and surface absorption — typically 0.75–0.85 for concrete/tile roofs, 0.65–0.75 for sloped metal roofs. So for a 100 m² concrete roof in a city receiving 1,000 mm annual rainfall: 100 × 1,000 × 0.80 × 0.001 = 80,000 litres per year.

What Can That Water Do?

An average Indian family of four needs about 70,000–100,000 litres per year for all uses (drinking, cooking, bathing, toilet, laundry).
